How To Use This Study Guide

  • This study guide is fairly straight forward. We have divided the Navigational Rules of the Road into four modules. The first three include all of the rules and the last module, which is optional to look over, includes the annexes, penalties, alternative compliance and vessel bridge-to-bridge radiotelephone regulations. The last module is very detailed and is there as a reference only.
  • You will notice that the Rules are listed out of order. That is not a mistake. We chose to list them in a way that would keep the material interesting and build upon each previous module. There are also two added sections titled "Intro to Lights and Shapes" and "Intro to Lights and Shapes II". These are to prep the user for the more detailed sections that come later in Module 3 so they are not overwhelmed with the information.
  • In general, each section will have notes (unless the material is short and self explanatory), followed by the reference material and all then quiz questions from the Coast Guard database relevant to those sections.
  • Once you are done with each section there are ten 50-question exams covering all the material for you to test your progress with. If you find that you are weak in certain areas, you are always able to go back to those sections.
  • The reference material will identify differences between INTERNATIONAL and INLAND rules by highlighting them inside these blocks (see below).
